AVANTE-garde at PICASSO

Kupka, Horses – and Playthings
AN EXHIBITION of Czech artist Frantisek Kupka’s work from the Centre Pompidou Collection is on show at the Museo Picasso in Málaga capital until 25 April.
A joint exhibition with the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, the collection ranges from his early academic work to his pioneer adventures into abstract art.
On show from 17 May to 5 September will be Picasso: Horses, approximately 50 works by the Málaga-born artist exploring the meaning of the horse images in his work. Picasso’s numerous pictures of horses alternated between male and female symbols, light and shade, tragedy and entertainment, desire and wisdom. He never abandoned this motif, and it was in fact part of his own personal mythology, from his earliest childhood years in Málaga, to the last days of his life in Mougins (France).
Featured from 4 October to 30 January (2011) will be Avant-Garde Playthings, a themed group exhibition showing how Picasso and a large number of avant-garde artists including Joan Miró became involved in showing children about the forms and concepts generically termed modern art.
More information about the museum and its other activities, which include seminars, Sunday shows for families, film cycles in the auditorium, education programmes, and library talks and literary events, at: Museo Picasso Málaga.
