Juana Criado from Málaga led the women home in the 2012 Australian Outback Marathon held in the desert around Uluru (Ayers Rock) as part of a trans-continental fund-raising initiative promoted by the Real Club Mediterráneo Málaga.
Criado was one of a group of 14 athletes representing the club in Australia. She finished seventh overall, while Manuel Narvaez was the best finisher among the Spanish contingent (sixth). In all, 50 runners took part in at least one of the five marathons – in Marrakech (Africa), Istanbul (Asia), London (Europe), New York (Americas) and finally Uluru (Oceania) – raising over €70,000 for the Save the Children organisation.
